1831年，北美洲某个偏僻的山谷村落，这里流传着一个古老的习俗。每到夏末节（10月31日）当天，村中要将所有不洁净的东西烧掉，其中便包括一个尚在襁褓中的婴儿。婴儿的母亲悲痛欲绝，眼睁睁看着宝贝被投入火中，于是愤而对村民做出诅咒，“每逢夏末节，村中的孩子便会被杀死。”接着这个恶毒的诅咒，邪恶的妖精从火中诞生。

　　影片讲述的是一个反映人性的故事，父亲乔治（迪格·梵戴克饰）在银行工作，时常认为子女不务正业，遂带他们上银行学习做事。但是儿子迈克和女儿珍生性调皮，使得保姆亦辞职。迈克与珍祈求理想的保姆，于是仙女玛莉（茱莉·安德鲁丝饰）应征而来，她喜爱孩子并教授孩子们如何在受挫后寻找快乐之道。正在这时，乔治因误会而被总裁辞退，仙女也离去，乔治才感悟如何向子女表达爱心，并开始了解除了钱外，还有很多值得珍惜的东西。
