《利器》改編自電影《控制》原著作者吉莉安弗琳（Gillian Flynn）另一小說，描述記者卡蜜兒（Camille）奉命返回家鄉調查兩起女童謀殺案，在一步步接近兇手的同時也揭露了她如謎一般的過往。《瞞天大佈局》奧斯卡提名女星艾美亞當斯（Amy Adams）主演卡蜜兒一角，《非關女孩》奧斯卡提名女配角派翠西亞克拉克森（Patricia Clarkson）則飾演她的母親。

《真實之虛》（UnREAL）主創馬蒂諾克森（Marti Noxon）擔任節目統籌，編劇團隊包括《城堡岩》（Castle Rock）史考特布朗（Scott Brown）、《上帝之手》（Hand of God）阿雷拉布萊赫爾（Ariella Blejer）。導演一職則由《美麗心計》艾美獎最佳迷你影集導演尚馬克瓦利（Jean-Marc Vallée）執導全八集。
