I have to say, it has been hard to stick with for me as well. I read the book many years ago, when it first came out and don't actually remember it very well though I liked it at the time. I think this has been tough to watch because it is hard to like any of the characters, especially Camiell. I get that she is incredibly damaged but if only she had some little redeeming trait that would help make her more palatable. A better sense of humor maybe...?

Still, I'm glad I have stuck with it and look am looking forward to the final episode next week.

The show is brilliant, actually. Original and groundbreaking in many ways. It's not "slow" and it's not "pointless" to any thinking person. It's introspective. Camille is broken and she is haunted. Life is all about about perspective. Perspective is what determines state of mind... at least in intelligent people.

You can gauge intelligence by what people complain about.

That's really a negative not a positive. By never being "mean" to anyone but herself, she is killing herself... through alcoholism and self-harm via cutting. That's the point, though. She certainly has an aloofness and a coldness, however. But she is a completely broken person so it makes sense. She probably finds it rather pointless to fight back against some of these horrible people. She is rather "mean" to the detective. He seems to genuinely care about her. But she has been suffering for so long, she can't let him in. She doesn't even consider him a boyfriend.

That is true. A lot of behavior is done unconsciously. If left unchecked, too much psychological damage becomes virtually irreversible and permanently alters someone's being. As the show points out, so much of this damage is done when people are kids, a time when they are not only lacking in wisdom but when they are rather powerless. Then when looking back, they can get consumed with 1) self blame or 2) a victim complex. Both can be completely debilitating. Camille seems to have both going on. She may blame herself for her sister's death and she may blame her mother for being an unloving monster. Where it gets complicated is that Adora blames her mother for being terrible and incapable of love, as we learned in this most recent episode (the sleep pinching revelation). So to an extent, both Camille and Adora are playing the victim and it is not serving either of them well. We all have negative elements in our lives but the trick is to see them early and not let them destroy us. Easier said than done of course. But all we can do is learn from them and try to get past them.

I think this show does a great job with the flashbacks and hallucinations. They are done in a very effective and haunting manner. The show really takes us inside Camille's tortured brain.

I will have to check out June Bug. Never saw that one.

Oldnewbie is simply harboring a cranky attitude about a perceived decline in Buffy The Vampire Slayer and shifting that criticisms to Sharp Objects, only because Marti Noxon was involved. I could understand the point if the book Sharp Objects was originally about Sasquatch encounters and was annoyingly spun into a drunk Bigfoot self-harming in the woods after school special. The thing is, Sharp Objects is not about Sasquatch. It is indeed about substance abuse and self-harm. They found the perfect person to executive produce this series. It seems that the critics agree, as it has been universally praised.

Maybe you should would wait for Bram Stoker's Sharp Objects to get green-lit? Perhaps they will approach you to be executive producer.

Politics. Yes another wonderful topic for discussion. Trump is exactly what I thought he'd be when he ran, a terrible president. However he is not Hitler, Stalin, or any other kind of dictatorial socialist. I know history and will argue to the end that any such comparison is 100% wrong.

Hillary and her ilk are closer to socialist leaders than Trump. I could not in good conscious vote for either but out of respect for those who gave their lives for our right to, I did vote independent.
