Discussão A Series of Unfortunate Events

I had never heard of the books when the movie came out and when I saw the film previews I thought WTF?! I must have seen the movie on HBO, but I loved it. Still do. While the show obviously give far more life to the books it just seems to fall kinda flat for me. I'm embarrased to say NPH is the weakest part of the show. He pales in comparison to Carrey's Olaf.

I love both movie and TV series for different reasons.

I should have said I'm only the first episode in and I'm going to keep watching. Hopefully I'll forget the movie and get more into the show. I'm loving Joan Cusack; always a favorite. Patrick Warburton is kinda reminding me of Jon Hamm in the HR Block commercials.

I like the series well enough but the movie was something special. I'll forever be disappointed that they didn't make more. I also agree about NPH. His performance doesn't come close to Jim Carrey's.

The kids have been growing on me though. Especially Sunny, she is adorable.

I've not read the books, but I saw first movie in the cinema and loved it. I've watched the series and enjoyed it but I wasn't mad about it. I like NPH but is nowhere near as good as Jim Carrey.

On all superficial levels, the movie wins. There are only two faults with it: Jim Carry being miscast and the script

The show loses at every single one of those aspects except the acting is almost on par (with the exception of Meryl Streep and few others) but it is the script that is better, but not delivery.

If the film had the script of the show, and each two episodes was a movie filmed consecutively which would be released in close proximity to each other, then the movie would've been perfect and there would have been no need for this second adaption

But two episodes of the series is equivalent to one book. They would have had to make 13 movies. I think they could have continued the movie series with 2-3 books per movie and it would have been fine. Unfortunately, they never made the sequels.

That's the problem. I was trying to emphasize that no matter what, adapting this series is hard, with either the limitations of TV or the Cinema

I totally agree with Rose about the script being better but the delivery being poorer.
I strongly disagree about Carey though : I think Count Olaf is EXACTLY the character he is PERFECT for playing. I can't imagine why anyone would not feel the way I do about him heheh ;) I keep thinking of the scene where he's playing the dinosaur and pecking at someone's head. Though I'm at episode 5 right now and I'm starting to be more at peace with NPH. I think he's doing a good job.
But yeah, something just seems off all the time. I think the visual and the script are great, but there's just something about the rendition that doesn't do it for me at all.

I agree with you @velvet_roses.

I think he could've played them well if they had not forced him to read from such an awkward script. He's a pleasant actor, but the role would've been much better if they had given him something to work with. NPH's makeup was not very well done. He looked more sinister in the set photos than moving. It would've been amazing if they got someone like Jeremy Irons to play the world, but that's outside the show's budget and he might've refused the script of the film adaptation.

@FlamboyantRose you mean Jim Carey could've played better with a better script or NPH ? I'm not sure I got you right.

In any case Harris is the executive producer of the series so I guess he must have some sort of say. I wonder how much.

I meant Jim Carey. I think the majority of the scripts in the show were a level above the film, but on all superficial levels and some scenes the movie overshadows the show.

@FlamboyantRose Yes, I agree with you. I wonder how carey would have done in NPH's place :P Pretty sure it would have been just great !

@velvet_roses This is so minor but I've noticed a few times you've spelt Jim Carrey's name as Carey. Just wanted to point out the extra R incase you didn't know.

I think I choose the movie. For two reasons:

1) Jim Carrey 2) I think the book's theme and style (overtly absurd, in a childish manner) works better on a movie than on a show. I enjoyed the show for 3 or 4 episodes, but then I was bored with it.

Well I didn't. Thank you haha !
