I can barely understand a word he says, he just mumbles crap all the time.
No wonder TV shows cast Brits, Canadians and Aussies all the time because this American guy can barely speak.

Not just Strait!
When I first started watching, it was such a problem for me that I wasn’t sure I’d continue with the series. I had to keep the volume up AND closed-caption on, since I often didn't have a clue what someone was saying. AND that woman with the “Leghorn Foghorn” voice drove me to distraction.
Also, I had to rewind every few minutes (sometimes more than once during the same scene) before I could finally figure out what folks were saying.
But, I hung in there; and…
Somewhere around the middle or so of S1, the dialogue stopped being a problem; and Avasarala’s voice no longer grated.

Been mostly OK , but upon binging the first season again some dialogue came out clearer and as such plot came together. But I find that with many good movies, they DO improve with age.

I haven't had any trouble understanding anyone on this show.

My first language is not English and I haven't had a problem with understanding the dialogue on the show yet. And I don't use subtitles. Yes, they tend to mumble sometimes but it's still comprehensible.

Brits can mumble, too. Just look at Jonny Lee Miller (Elementary). I can't even hear him most of the time.

That's probably why he snaps to attention & barks , when he needs to make a point.

This was on the other night. I didn't watch it; but I noticed his name in the credits.
For someone whose dramatic range seems to be limited to a deep frown, he appears to be doing OK for himself.
I'm not saying he is bad actor; it's just that compared to the other actors on the show, he just doesn't bring enough "weight" to the role. Even his tough-talking sounds lightweight.
(He is...was?...also on "2 Broke Girls". I don't watch the show, but saw him while flipping channels; maybe he is better at comedy.)
NOTE TO HOLDEN/STRAIT FANS:

He gets cast because of his pretty face and y'all know it

Just a guess but I think it's because he's trying to speak below his natural register - he's trying to make his voice sound deeper than it really is and it's not working, it's just messing with his annunciation. Great show, though - I'm really enjoying it.

I have opposite opinion. I think it's Brits and Aussies who mumble and I have hard time to understand them without subtitles. I find American English most understanding & easier (I'm not native English speaker).

Strait was never on 2 Broke Girls. You must be confusing him with someone else?

More likely named the wrong show. Let's not forget my "Midsomer Murders"/"Murdoch Mysteries"
.
Been so long, (and since I was just flipping thru) don't have a clue now re: which show I was actually talking about then. But, since my comment was about the actor and not the show--wouldn't want to
"2 Broke Girls" fans--no real harm done.
