So this was the genesis for Skynet as it has an ability to learn. Still wouldn't the characters figure that if they ever got ahold of it that Terminators cease to exist? I mean they would see time ripples and either John, Derrick or Cameron would disappear.

That's not how the time travel works. No one would disappear. Every time somebody time travels to the past, a new timeline is forged.
They were trying to get a hold of the Turk. Haven't you seen the series?
