I see "Soap" in the genre.
When I think of a soap I think of a (melo)drama set in a family home e.g. Neighbours or around some related people in a business e.g. Dynasty. But there are few scenes like that in Prisoner:Cell Block H, which is set in a prison where most people are not related.

Other sites also list it as a soap opera/serial. I think that any TV series that has an ongoing plot centered around the same group of people & their day to day lives is considered to be a soap opera.
