In-universe, it makes a lot more sense than tangling with a different alien every week. They'd have been safe in a place they knew and could assimilate easily enough. They would have to hide the robot and Dr. Smith might try changing history. (Has there ever been a series where a family got stuck in the past? Seems overdue.)

Obviously, everything had to be returned to the status quo, but it's fun to think about.
