Maybe they had not heard because their ‘formative years’ were:

3) Before there were 8K channels, cable, and streaming…24/7. (More opportunities to see stuff...more likely to see stuff.)

2) Before Social Media became so social. (“Word of mouth is….”)

1) Before “like-cling-to-like” went the way of “Bile Beans”. (They would have been mostly ‘rubbing shoulders’ with their counterparts who shared similar interests.)

PARTIAL DISCLOSURE: I only knew 2 of the 3 you listed…had to lookup one of them...but; not saying which .

Sheldon: "I have a working knowledge of the important things in the universe."

But yet Sheldon was able to sing some of the lyrics to "We Will Rock You" in the episode with the burning van, so he wasn't completely ignorant to pop culture.

Also, it's way too late for me to bring this up now but Brian May of Queen wrote We Will Rock You and I used to be obsessed with him on the old board. I did eventually see him in concert and sat close enough to be within 10 feet of him when he walked the catwalk!
