There are many reasons why I think the show went south starting with seasons they had no GRRM material to go off of and there were MANY instances, too many to name in a single thread to encourage anyone to read it, that I felt the show writers stumbled. But I will name a couple, off the top of my head, as to why the ending was unfulfilling.

1) The stretching out the final season to almost 4 years and only 13 episodes was a monumental fuck up. The show understandably lost steam and I am not even sure what was their motivation for this. If it was to buy time to come up with better writing then that makes it even sadder. Although I think it may have been an attempt to cover up my next point which is: 2) The devolving of Dany from a strong, loving leader to a jealous, vindictive tyrant just felt too rushed. The scene when she notices how everyone loves Jon reminded me of the scene when Viserys (her brother) is seething on how the "low" Dothraki are loving her. It just seemed like they were trying to ham-fist their way into turning Dany into a nasty person in as short of time as possible. This could have been remedied easily with 2 complete final seasons with 10 episodes each. The penultimate season would have concentrated on the White Walker war and this would allow time for the development of her character. The last season would be about the final confrontation with Cersei and more time to show her become the monster that she becomes. Also, no goddamn year breaks in between seasons.

There were too many plots going on in this show that they attempted to wind down too quickly. IMO, they should never have gone the "Mad Queen" route. They should have just taught us the lesson of what a true loving ruler was and have Dany willingly give the throne to Jon. With that plotline, you would not have needed the two full seasons and you could have kept the godawful yearly skips (puke 🤮) without too much of an impact. This would have solved a bunch of the WTF moments we encountered such as Unsullied & Dothraki quietly going away, choosing Bran as King, frying little babies in the street, etc. Again, so many WTFs to count. I'm all for a surprise ending but not to the extent that it doesn't make sense.

I think if more episodes, they could have concentrated on this more:

  • Dany becomes Cersei. In fighting the queen bitch, Dani fails to realize that in all her power gain, she became her worst enemy in the end. Jon realizes it and destroys her before it can go any further or he'll become what Jamie (Cersei's lover) eventually became.

What I hated though was when Dani & Cersei came face to face, there was no confrontation. It just seemed to be questionable stares from a distance. I'm glad they at least had Tyrion find Cersei's body. I was surprised how hard it hit him and just proves he had a heart.

So what was the point of Cersei being pregnant again for Jamie if she was to be killed off with her unborn child inside her? Someone comes along and rips it out of her dead body?

I won't even begin to elaborate on Bran becoming king when he was barely even shown the past 2 years and not at all the year before.

Yes, with more episodes you can develop the characters in ways that seem more believable for sure. And Tyrion had a heart to a fault. Which is why he fell in love with a prostitute not once (Shae) but twice (his off-screen marriage to one ).

And Bran becoming King is just silly. No one there would have voted for that. Only Tyrion knew him enough to know he was a good guy. And where did they get this notion he couldn't father children? As far as I know, paraplegics have no problem in this department.

Reminded me of when the season opened with that little boy king who ended up dead quick.

At least they voted on no future king would be born into the throne.
