I'd say only a handful of producer/directors could pull it off. My first pick would be Ronald Moore (Battlestar Galactica 2004) who surprised the crap outta me by not only remaking the classic show but actually expanding it, digging deeper, darker, and making it better than the original. My next pick would be Peter Hyams (2010: The Year We Make Contact) whose 2001 sequel wasn't bad considering the big shoes he had to fill.
I think Space 2199 could work as a very dark psychological drama, just like the 2 examples I gave. Because the original show didn't really explore the psychological twists of being alone in space on a rock with no prospects, barring that 1 episode where Koenig flips out and trashes the Eagle hangar...and maybe Guardians of Piri which was an awesome surrealist mind trip.
A couple years ago I would've said Ridley Scott (Alien) could do it justice, but after seeing his last few films... eh

Done well.
Kidding aside, any news on the 2199 project? Or is it dead in space?

I like Ronald Moore too. He understands the source material and the daily grind of putting out a weekly TV show.
