The Movie Database Support

I'm writing this so that the site maintainers hopefully see it and consider fixing the missing functionality. slight_smile I'll provide reasoning for why I think it matters and I'm happy to answer follow-up questions.

The 3 non-custom lists are lacking essential sorting options like "by TMDb score" and "by my score". Ideally, I'd love to see filtering functionality as well, like on IMDb (which I moved over from to TMDb).

Why is this needed? Other than it being essential functionality, I use the Favorites list to save films or series I want to watch or recommend, or just bookmark for some reason.

My favorites list has 2157 titles, there's no humanly way I can go through that in a sensible way without relevant sorting tools. Even with it, it would still be kinda tedious, so filtering tools would help a lot (tickable genres, release year range, runtime, score range etc.). Having said that, better sorting options would actually make it viable to browse the list.

I thought I found a workaround (albeit tedious still), but it turns out missing functionality made that impossible:

  • I figured I could duplicate my Favorites list, but there was no option for this.
  • Then I figured I could export and import into a custom list. This was a no-go, and the process was kinda tedius in that it sent a file by e-mail rather than just letting me download it directly.

Why am I not using a custom list to begin with? Two reasons.

Firstly, I imported it from IMDB, so using a custom list was never even an option anyway, because TMDb doesn't support importing into custom lists.

But secondly, I wouldn't want to use custom lists for this either way, because then the workflow becomes quite tedius because it requires multiple steps to do what is a quick operation today with the quick-add buttons (custom lists could also have quick-add buttons, but they don't).

You might feel like this doesn't matter too much, but I hope you can be aware of different users' use-cases and needs. There's also the fact that the amount of friction, intuitiveness and functionality of a UI determines how (and if) people use it and how they use it. I could go into more detail how exactly the extra steps of using custom lists actually does matter and isn't just a preference thing, it adds a lot of tedium and friction in what is already a busy day. Especially when adding multiple titles, e.g. in a conversation etc. It just becomes a huge barrier.

The solution?: Hopefully this functionality is added, as it has been needed for quite some time now.

My only viable solution at this point is either going back to IMDb or find a new alternative because as of now the titles in my lists aren't browsable in any viable or reasonable manner. So the list items are sort of trapped in a large container where you need to take out one by one in an irrelevant order to browse it. disappointed_relieved

Please do consider this, I want to continue using TMDb. :)
