I became a huge, like huge, Basil Rathbone fan just under two years ago when my dad introduced me to his Sherlock Holmes movies. I got hooked pretty quick, and that how I became the classic film fanatic I am today. I still like Basil a lot, but have other favorites now as well, mostly because I've already seen most of his good movies, and, admittedly, a few of his not so good ones. Some of my favorite Basil performances (besides Sherlock Holmes) are John Black from The Comedy of Terrors, and Levasseur from Captain Blood. So, any other fans out there? Fee free to respond and have some friendly, intelligent conversation about the Great Baz!

I've all my life gravitated much more so to old movies (and everyone and everything associated with them) than to newer ones. For sure that's because both of my parents were 44 years my senior (and all of my grandparents were born during the late 1800s [one particular grandfather in 1882]), therefore I grew up routinely hearing and seeing about stuff from the '20s, '30s, and '40s (which those decades, as well as the late 1910s, was when my parents were either growing up or coming of age) being part of natural everyday life. Not surprisingly, the films and stars, not to mention also the music, etc., of the mentioned early decades wound up default becoming mine by association. I guess you could say that my soul, and what "informs" me, is rooted in the mentioned decades.

Very cool! I can definitely relate, because I was born when my parents were older too, and my grandparents both tried to break into the acting business, and they lived in Hollywood for a while when my dad was very young. I was told that my grandparents met each other in a drama class! I've also heard that my grandfather was a film fanatic as well, though I never got to meet him. So I totally get it, and I feel the same way about the old movies. One of the biggest things I really like about them (besides all the amazing acting talent, of course), is how they were much more wholesome and had moral values and didn't have all the swearing and nudity and gore that they put into so much of the newer stuff. That, and the writing and story was actually interesting and well-done, instead of focusing so much on the over-blown special effects.

Very neat recollections, barry!
I 100% absolutely agree with everything you said and feel the exact same way about things. No doubt it comes from having been raised very traditionally and formally, by members of a much older generation than my own (and with my siblings and relatives having all been my seniors), therefore my having been very used to, from the get go, being around older people (of multiple different generations) and their (in several, but not all, cases) traditional ways and views.
I always loved hearing and seeing about the earlier times. The '20s, '30s, and '40s - the vibe, look, and ways (also music), also classiness, of them - have always especially held tremendous appeal for and very much "speak" to me. When I watch movies from back then, I completely "get" them and the people and mindsets of back then.
In Pre-Code films, I love that, even though they can (and in numerous instances do) get quite saucy, still the filmmakers and performers knew to not step over a fine invisible line, leaving the rest to heavy suggestion; it's fun and delightful seeing how creatively and imaginatively smart Hollywood used to be. Now they just spell everything out, like audience members won't otherwise be able to understand what happens next (that goes, too, for violence and gore).
PS: My maternal grandfather (who died long before my time) had a 1st cousin who went to Hollywood and became a professional physical trainer for many stars - unfortunately I don't know which specific stars.

Thanks, gen! Yours are very interesting as well!
I also understand about being raised very traditionally, and I tend to do very well in conversation with people much older than myself. Having no siblings and older parents, I've spent most of my time around adults anyway, and enjoy it very much.
And it is very cool to see how creative Hollywood used to be, and it's a shame they're just not like that anymore. I really understand and agree with the mindsets of way back then too.
That's really interesting about your grandfather's cousin; I'll bet they ended up meeting some pretty famous people.
P.S. Just wanted to say thanks again for being so nice and friendly to me, as I said earlier, I'm very new to TMDb, but I'm enjoying it very much, a lot of it due to being able to have discussions like these, unlike on IMDb. It's delightful to have come across such a kind fellow classic films fan!

There's not a whole lot of TMDbers who participate in the site's Classic Films (including about the individual performers thereof) discussions, though that's gradually improving over time.
barry, it's wonderful that you've joined us, and clearly you're going to be the initiator of good topics, a great discussions participant, and will be a real asset here!
@rudely and wonder, for a long overdue very welcome change, in recent days there's daily been more People-category discussion threads about actual actors, actresses, directors, etc. on the TMDb People latest-posts queue than there are Beyonce music/pop-culture and Henry Cavill random threads! Finally this People-category forum is getting actively daily used for what it was intended for and is looking great!!!
