HC
Very exciting news today! I've been a fan of Highlander since I was lad. From the movies in all of their 80s, Queen slathered glory to the TV show with an actor who looked remarkably like one of my brothers. Being not shy with swords, and having a director as talented as Chad Stahelski at the helm, this is an opportunity like no other. Deep diving into franchise storytelling with all the tools at our disposal, is going to make this an adventure I (and hopefully all of you) shall never forget.
And as you can see from the swipe, I've lately been dipping into some of my Scottish heritage, and inadvertently getting my base line research underway! #Highlander
F*ck! Yeah!
Ladies, it may remind you of TW, but it’s different.

When I saw this on SHM, I thought the geeks made a mistake. RI as in Redanian Intelligence? Yes, it is Redanian Intelligence. Cool! Those geeks are almost always spot-on.
BTW, why is MF's white butt being eyed to play a Mongolian warrior? WTH? Do not race swap characters! This is a good opportunity to have a POC in the film. It isn't forced DEI if the OG character is a POC.

Chad Stahelski is gearing up for his next big project, Highlander, for which he has now revealed new filming details.
"We start shooting in January in Scotland, that's why I go right after I leave. I go to Scotland on Monday to do the final location scout."
Stahelski emphasized the complexity of training actors to handle swords convincingly, highlighting that achieving realistic and engaging action sequences requires significant preparation and dedication.
"Swords, to me, are of one of the trickiest things to do in fight scenes, because if I mess up too much with the firearm, the muzzle flashes are digital," he added. "So we don't have to worry about hurting anyone. When we do car stuff, that's also a big concern. But there's ways now, cables that take some of the hazards out for the cast." He went on to explain that with "Swords, it's a little trickier because now I got to trust that my actors are swinging this piece of metal at each other, and hopefully not gonna take their eyes out or stab somebody. Every sword movie, somebody gets poked or hit on the head or something like that. It takes a little bit more skill and a little bit more dedication. So that's always a concern."
With faith in his team to make everything look convincing, Stahelski isn't worried about the details of how well his actors swing swords — his goal now is to bring together all of the moving pieces, to deliver the best film he can, while showcasing sword fighting to a new generation. He said:
"Most of our concerns now are not really about training cast. We've got that machine up and running, and I think we have the right cast. We have the right people. We have the right trainers. We've dug up some of the best sword people I’ve ever met in my life in the last six months, that are helping us. It's more about how do you bring it all together and make it something. It's not Princess Bride, it's not Crouching Tiger, it's not Master & Commander, it's not Zorro. What's this new look of action or sword fighting that people could be excited about? That keeps me up at night."

It looks like the wee one will arrive soon.
So before shooting starts in January, HC will have plenty of time to play with the wee one, geek out in his basement over the WH40K show and lose whatever stress, excitement and empathy weight he gained during the pregnancy. And of course I’ll be right here waiting for shirtless, sweaty gym vids like this

I don't know much about HighL. But a geek said that there's an Egyptian-Spaniard character with a Scottish accent that's been living in Japan for many years. Maybe the Mongolian character is just a white man in Mongolia. It better be if a white actor is going to play him.

Speaking to Collider's Aidan Kelley alongside producer Josh Oreck, Stahelski opened up on when fans could expect the film, which he is starting prep work on imminently.
“If everything works out in the next 24 hours, we'll be shooting sometime in September. And in 2027 or 2028, you’ll be watching Highlander.”
That’s a huge update for a project that’s been simmering in development for years. Originally announced in 2021 with Cavill attached, Highlander has kept a relatively low profile as Stahelski focused on expanding the John Wick universe. But now, with Stahelski actively prepping the film, the long-awaited return to the fantastical highlands of Scotland could be right around the corner.
For Stahelski, the reboot represents a chance to apply everything he’s learned from crafting the Wick films into a new mythos. He hinted that while we might not get the fish tank transitions from the original Highlander, stylistic nods are definitely on the table. “I don’t know if I’m going through a fish tank, but let’s see what we got," said Stahelski.
Last year, Stahelski also revealed how the plot would be changed, but would still honor the mythology of the original while expanding its scope globally and narratively. “We're bringing it forward from the early 1500s in the highlands to the beyond present-day New York and Hong Kong, and seeing how it goes,” he explained. “There's big opportunity for action. There's a chance to play a character that not a lot of people get to play. And it's a bit of a love story, but not how you think.”
Stahelski, who describes himself as a “Zatōichi superfan,” has made it clear he’s interested in exploring immortality through both physicality and emotion — and he believes Cavill is the perfect fit for that complexity. “My selling point was, to [Henry Cavill], look, you’ve got a guy that’s been alive for over 500 years. He’s the last person in the world that wanted to be in this situation,” he said. “So you get to cover quite a broad spread of a character arc there. And you get to experience someone that’s trained over 500 years and sort of played [with many types of] martial arts.”
Production on Highlander will hopefully begin in September, with a possible release date of 2027 or 2028.

[Chad] Stahelski first started working on a new “Highlander” movie in 2016, but as it finally seemed primed to go into production, TheWrap learned last month that Stahelski’s “Highlander” would move from Lionsgate to Amazon MGM Studios’ United Artists and producer Scott Stuber. It was something of a shock. The “John Wick” franchise had brought in more than $1 billion worldwide for Lionsgate, which is a feather in its cap, especially considering its recent box office hardships (one of its big bets for 2025 is “Ballerina,” a movie clunkily described as “From the World of John Wick”). Why would the studio let Stahelski go?
The budget for “Highlander” was, well, high, with Stahelski wanting $180 million and Lionsgate attempting to cap the budget at $165 million, according to two Lionsgate insiders who asked not to be identified. Lionsgate execs internally worried that “Highlander” is a one-quadrant movie, catering to Gen X males who remembered the original movie (and the sequels and syndicated TV series that followed), one of the studio insiders told TheWrap.
But Lionsgate’s perceived loss could be Amazon MGM Studios’ gain, as the studio has recently amassed a portfolio full of projects based on long-dormant 1980s IP including “Masters of the Universe” and “Voltron,” enacting a strategy that could play directly to Gen Xers who regularly frequent Prime Video’s “dad TV” action shows like “Reacher” and “Jack Ryan.” “Highlander,” with its soundtrack full of jaunty Queen tunes (which Stahelski told TheWrap he intends to reuse), fits right in.
“Amazon MGM is establishing themselves as the kind of studio similar to what Warner Bros. was in the ’90s and the 2000s,” producer Adrian Askarieh, of the “Hitman” franchise and “The Last Bear,” told TheWrap. “They have put together an eclectic slate of original and IP-based big-budget and mid-budget movies; many of them driven by movie stars. Their presentation at April’s CinemaCon effectively emphasized this strategy. I think it’s exciting for the business and the creative community as a whole.”
That CinemaCon slate, which Amazon MGM Studios intends to fulfill a promise of releasing at least 14 films in theaters next year, includes sci-fi comedies like the Ryan Gosling-fronted “Project Hail Mary,” a heist film starring Chris Hemsworth called “Crime 101” and awards bait like Luca Guadagnino’s drama “After the Hunt.” This ’80s IP push, it would appear, aims to fill the “blockbuster” slot on their slate for years to come.
