on his birthday, Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin KBE (Born: 16 April, 1889; Died: 25 December, 1977; at age 88).
Charlie Chaplin, a great, if not the greatest, slapstick comedy actor in the silent film era, best known for his portrayal of the kind, friendly, but clumsy tramp, always being chased around and away by everyone.
Some of his best known silent movies are "The Kid (1921)", "The Gold Rush (1925)", "The Circus (1928)", "City Lights (1931)" and "Modern Times (1936)".
In the movie "The Great Dictator (1940)" he introduced sound with dialogue.

In the New Year Honours 1975 he was knighted (Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (KBE)) by Queen Elizabeth II.

He also received the longest standing ovation in the history of the Academy Awards when he received his honorary Oscar for his contributions to cinema in 1972

He's definitely one of the most readily recognizable and mimicked performers of all time, with his trademark "Little Tramp" character's look, style, and distinctive mannerisms. Probably the most famous Chaplin imitation is by Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulevard.
Easily my fave Chaplin film is 1921's The Kid.
