Discuss Jojo Rabbit

director could not decide if it's gonna be drama or comedy, so the result is bastard which doesn't work, better rewatch Inglorious basterds (where the mix worked) or Boy in striped pyjama (for children's POV)

5/10

also the cigarette joke was very poor considering Hitler was nonsmoker and in general making fun of this from someone whose country was not affected by war it's also quite poor taste unlike Monty pythons for instance

I give the movie 7/10 but I was a bit disappointed.

I expected a full comedy yet this movie had a lot more drama than I thought at first. So it felt a bit unbalanced.

I agree that it's overrated first of all, I don't find it funny as a comedy where the plot is also quite a cliche the attempt of mixing genres don't quite work for me

That's exactly what I thought. It was very muddled in tone. It wasn't a bad film but it would have been a lot better if it had picked a tone and stuck to it.

Overrated, in that out of the 6 who saw this one, 4 vociferously disagreed with the otherwise lavish praise it received

It was actually very popular, dude. I heard loads of people talking about it and singing it's "brilliance". It's the critics who were actually the less enthusiastic ones. Reviews weren't bad but they tended to be 3s out of 5 in general. I think it's the Oscar buzz that drove the assumption that it was well praised.

Please explain this statement. New Zealand was greatly affected by WW II. Here is a short overview:

I watched it on HBO Max a few days ago, not knowing much outside of its Oscar nominations ...and respectfully disagree! I thought the movie was brilliant! Taiki as Hitler was hilarious (reminded me of his vampire role in What We Do In The Shadows) and it had a decent mix of serious, emotions and comedy. I gave it a 8/10! Not gonna be one of my FAVORITE movies, but deserving of its recognition!

That is all! Flaming welcome!

I think 4/10 is generous

Was NZ attacked by any country? If not, you was not affected by war if you voluntarily chose to participate in it.

Jojo Rabbit is more akin to a "Black comedy" with subtle jokes that may be slightly nuanced. When humour has to be explained to the audience (canned laughter for example) it's pretty much failed. The most successful gags are those that allow the viewer to (perhaps subconsciously) believe they have an understanding/knowledge that others may not as if they belong to some sort of exclusive we got the joke club. Most people will have experiencednly grin, thinking the sudden flush of satisfaction when, a few days after viewing thenscene, a metaphoric lightbulb appears above their head and a grin spreads across their face, their internal dialogue espousing; "Ohhh!! I just got that one". They are then a fully paid up member of the club.

*Us Brits would be in trouble without the blinking Emoji.

WELL THATS PROBABLY BECAUSE ITS VERY RARE FOR THE YANKEES TO MAKE MOVIES FOR COMEDY SUCH AS THIS ONE - THE YANKEES PREFER DRAMA BECAUSE THEY PREFER REAL WARS !!!! as SOOn as I noticed that Taika Waititi was in it - I knew it would be Comedy - Because He Only Does Comedy movies !!!! Thank god !!

well Thats why its called Comedy - They Twist Everything that was Facts - the Funniest thing if they made Hitler a Homosexual in this Movie - after Exterminating all the Real Ones - when The Real Hitler was Alive !!!!
