Nanny admits to Elizabeth that Mr. and Mrs. Gates resent taking orders from a young woman. Postcards arrive from Helen in the Black Forest, and from Phyllis, visiting friends in America. After Elizabeth wants the issue forgotten, Gates demands to have a word with Arthur about Jim.

The Bourne family eagerly anticipates the return of Arthur after a two month absence, but Laura is intimidated by the commander. Victoria lets slip Phyllis' secret meeting with Jack.
