Henry Cavill To Star In & EP ‘Warhammer 40,000’ Film & TV Franchise As Amazon Studios Acquires Rights To Games Workshop Brand
Amazon Studios has made it official, confirming that it has secured global rights to the Warhammer 40,000 game from Games Workshop for Henry Cavill (Man of Steel) to star in and executive produce the Warhammer 40,000 franchise across all Amazon Studios productions. The agreement encompasses rights to the universe across TV series, film, and likely games and animation.
Since launching nearly 40 years ago, the Warhammer brand has expanded through GAW’s miniatures, sourcebooks, tabletop games, animations, novels, a wealth of licensed material, and video games.
Warhammer 40,000 is set in the far future, where humanity stands at the edge of what might be its brightest future, or its darkest age. The threats to humankind’s empire are many — traitors driven by the fires of ambition, alien empires sworn to reclaim the stars, and the corruption of reality by malevolent gods.
“Warhammer 40,000 has captured the imagination of fans of all ages, from all walks of life, and all over the world,” said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon and MGM Studios. “We are excited to work with Henry, Vertigo Entertainment, and Games Workshop across our Amazon entertainment businesses on this brilliant, immersive franchise for our global customers to experience for years to come.”
Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Natalie Viscuso (The Lego franchise) partnered with Cavill to secure the Warhammer 40,000 IP before taking it to Amazon Studios. Vertigo will executive produce with Cavill and GAW’s Andy Smillie and Max Bottrill alongside Amazon Studios.
“I have loved Warhammer since I was a boy, making this moment truly special for me. The opportunity to shepherd this cinematic universe from its inception is quite the honour and the responsibility,” said Cavill. “I couldn’t be more grateful for all the hard work put in by Vertigo, Amazon Studios and Games Workshop to make this happen. One step closer to making a nigh on lifelong dream come true.”
HC
For 30 years I have dreamt of seeing a Warhammer universe in live action. Now, after 22 years of experience in this industry, I finally feel that I have the skill set and experience to guide a Warhammer Cinematic Universe into life. Partnering with Natalie Viscuso at Vertigo has been a blessing beyond words, without her we might not have found the perfect home at Amazon. And having a home like Amazon will give us the freedom to be true to the massive scope of Warhammer. To all of you Warhammer fans out there, I promise to respect this IP that we love. I promise to bring you something familiar. And I endeavour to bring you something fantastic that is, as of yet, unseen.
Our first steps are to find our Filmmaker/Creator/Writer. Watch this space, my friends.

This is not something that can be arranged overnight or even a few months. I think HC hinted at this on his IG on April 12, 2020. The pandemic would just started.
HC: Considering we are, both, going through the Easter period, and going through The Lockdown, I figured it a good time to put a silver lining onto the cloud that is some of the darker moments during this time. So I've decided to polish some old skills and try my hand at some new ones! It is a time of rebirth after all. So, as you can see here, the obvious might look a little bit like a tiny helmet...which it is. One of my almost life long hobbies, that I've been following but not actively doing, is this. A company called Games Workshop...or plastic crack as "we" call it. Genuinely can't get enough of the lore they have built over the decades. They have been some of my most enthused reads! If you were in denial about me being a geek before, you can't hide from it now. Also, in the background of this photo, there may just be some completely new skills I'm working on.....or there may not be, so all of your eye squinting and attempts at digital unfocusing will be in vain....orrrr maybe they won't.
TW S02 started shooting before the pandemic. I think HC wasn’t pleased with S02. According to the book geeks, 90% of S02 never happened in the books. So maybe HC started working on realizing his W40k dream? Hence, the rumors that he wanted to leave after S02?
RI: Back in Summer 2021, when The Witcher Season 2 was in post-production and Season 3 hadn’t been renewed yet, we heard from a source that recasting Geralt was a growing possibility at Netflix. The reason for that was that Henry Cavill was considering leaving the series after Season 2 because he and the producers “weren’t seeing eye to eye” regarding content and Geralt’s role in the The Witcher.
And indeed, our beliefs were solidified when Season 3 was officially confirmed in September 2021 and a little later, in November, a report from The Hollywood Reporter appeared saying Cavill had “just renewed” his contract and would be getting $1 Million per episode for Season 3 as opposed to $400K, his earlier The Witcher salary.

This article shows and describes ten W40k characters that HC could play. I like Lord Solar Macharius. He’s #3. He’s the imperium's greatest hero.

Two more pics of Lord Solar Macharius. His armor is just gorgeous.

The armor is stunning and looks like it will be expensive. Amazon will be spending a lot of money on armors.

Why is everybody wondering who HC will play? Warhammer made him into a playable character in the new Total War Warhammer 2. He’s the Loremaster Of Hoeth. Look at the pic in the article.
NME: Cavill appears in ‘The Warden and the Paunch’ as a Loremaster of Hoeth with the same name. The playable character has a “white wolf” trait that grants a +15 bonus vs large, as well as “advocate” which gives +3 untainted to the local province, according to screenshots from PCGamesN.
HC will be so delicious. Not a facial hair in sight and he’s going to be blue!!!!!

Announced by Games Workshop as an investor update and on its Warhammer Community website early Monday morning, the ink is dry and the deal is done – Amazon will be making 40k TV and movies, just as planned in its December 2022 reveals.
And GW’s share price had a temporary 4% bounce this morning to celebrate, before settling again (below screenshot via Google finance at around 6.30am ET / 3.30amPT).
Per its investor update post, Games Workshop has sold Amazon “exclusive rights… in relation to films and television series set within the Warhammer 40,000 universe, together with an option for Amazon to license equivalent rights in the Warhammer Fantasy universe”.
As confirmed by WarCom, Henry Cavill will act as executive producer on the project – presumably giving him an E.P. credit on every movie or TV series made from the deal.
While there’s no details public about the possibilities for those future collaborations on the Warhammer Fantasy universes, it’s certainly a tantalising prospect for fans of Age of Sigmar and Warhammer The Old World.
With its customary euphemistic coyness, WarCom’s Monday morning article reminds us that “TV and Film production is a mammoth undertaking” and projects can take three years or more to complete, from the point of initial contract signing.
One detail behind that – which ought to please sticklers for Warhammer 40k lore, but anger those itching for a release date – is that the contract guarantees an entire year to nail down creative boundaries between GW and Amazon, before any productions are allowed to start work.
Per the investor post: “Games Workshop and Amazon will work together for a period of 12 months to agree creative guidelines for the films and television series to be developed by Amazon.
“The agreement will only proceed once the creative guidelines are mutually agreed between Games Workshop and Amazon.”
That long prologue should give GW a chance to ensure Amazon can’t take too many liberties with Warhammer 40k’s beloved grim, dark sci-fi universe, as well as allowing the creative forces behind these projects time to prepare.
On the other hand, it means the (potentially vast) revenues to come from these 40k TV series and movies won’t be realised for at least a year, even though GW reports income from its IP licensing ventures a year ahead; as the firm confirms in its Monday morning investor update, there’s “no change to its forecast for the 53 week period ending 2 June 2024”.
So we won’t be able to even try to puzzle out exactly how much Amazon has paid for these rights for a little while – but we can expect the ‘licensing’ line in GW financial reports to start climbing in the latter part of 2024 at the latest.
The firm paid UK staff a $3000 bonus in 2023 thanks to bumper profits despite weaker licensing revenues this year – GW employees must be cautiously excited to see what impact Cavill and his band of merry TV writers eventually has on the business.

I don't think so. So I wouldn't wet my undies just yet, if I was you. The Warhammer Fantasy Universe seems to be a different thing.

It's such a shame that HC will play only one character. I think the most important or most powerful character doesn't do much. I think he's attached to cables that feeds him?

WH40K
OK. But why the exec. prod. quote too?
They should do some sort of multiverse, so HC can play three characters.
They can do, let's say, a vertical multi-time-verse. There's time-travel to past, now and future in one universe.
They can do, let's say, a horizontal multi-dimension-verse. There's dimension-travel among different universes existing at the same time.
In both types of verse, a universe consists of several worlds.
In both types of verse, there are two other variants of a person (so three), they all look similar, but they don't have the same name or job.

I don't remember the geeks mentioning it. They made a list of important character that HC can play. One that looks like a golden angel was popular.
HC must be in geek heaven. lol
Did your head spin or hurt while writing all that geeky stuff? lol
